This article explains how an Oklahoma school with self-contained classrooms will properly report self-contained classes to the Wave for the OSDE Class Size report. These steps are needed because schools typically create multiple classes for self-contained teachers in SchoolInsight. However, the Class Size report requires exactly one class per self-contained teacher with the proper grade level self-contained subject. Therefore, special consideration should be taken when managing self-contained classes in both SchoolInsight and on the Class Size report.
To properly report self-contained classes, the admin will:
- Set the state number on courses
- Create or update subject area classes
- Exclude courses from the Class Size report
Set the state number on courses
The OSDE has designated specific grade-level subject codes to be used in reporting courses for self-contained teachers. Subject codes are found in the Self-Contained section of the OSDE PK - 8th Subject Codes publication and are managed in the State Number data field on the course “State Data” tab. Each self-contained grade level will require at least one course that uses the grade level subject code. Below is an example of options for how subject codes can be applied:

- Type the subject code into the State Number field
- Save
Create or update subject area classes
Classes will inherit the subject codes for their associated courses. Therefore, if all classes that are needed for gradebook and report cards have been created and are assigned to the proper grade-level course, no further action is required. Otherwise, create classes and if needed, reassign existing classes to the relevant grade level course.
Exclude courses from the Class Size report
Changes to data in Schoolinsight will transfer to the Wave within a few hours, however, the Class Size report may take a few days to update. Once the classes appear on the report, take steps to exclude all but one class from the report, leaving only a single class with the grade level self-contained subject code for each self-contained teacher. For more information about the schedule of updates to the Class Size report and how to exclude classes from the Class Size report, contact the OSDE at Ryan.Pieper@sde.ok.gov.
