Behavior logs enable teachers to record student behavior (good or bad) without involving the school administration or taking disciplinary action. Schools find them helpful because teachers directly observe student behavior on a regular basis. After creating a log, it may be sent to parents to keep them informed, or the school can pull the details from behavior log reports.
Behavior logs can be used along with, or independently from, discipline incidents. If your school chooses to use both, please provide appropriate training for teachers to clarify differences and eliminate confusion.
The article will guide you through setting up and using behavior logs. Some steps are meant for admins and others for teachers. Here are the article’s sections:
Enable Behavior Logs
Admins enable behavior logs through the discipline module. You can enable behavior logs without having to enable disciplinary incidents. Admins control how behavior logs are viewed and accessed by instructors.
To enable behavior logs:
- Go to Admin Main > Discipline > Options
- Edit
- Check the checkbox Allow teachers to keep behavior logs
- Choose an option for Instructors can view other instructors’ behavior logs
- Save
If all instructors should have access to behavior logs, then you need to enable data sharing in instructor permissions as follows:
- Go to Admin Main > Options > Permissions (Instructors)
- Edit
- Check the box for Can view other teachers’ data?
- Save
At this stage the module is ready to be used.
Create Behavior Logs
Instructors and admins use the same steps to create behavior logs but access them at different levels.
To create a behavior log:
- As an admin
- Go to Admin Main > Discipline > Behavior Logs
- As an instructor
- Go to Instructor Main > Tools > Behavior Logs
- Create Behavior Log
- Search for and select a Student
- Document the behavior in the Comments box
- (Optional) Toggle Hide From Parents? on or off
- Save
Share Behavior Logs
Behavior logs may be made available for viewing on the parent portal or sent to parents via email.
If you want to share behavior logs with parents on the parent portal, then you need to enable it from the parent permissions as follows:
- Go to Admin Main > Options > Parent Information Access
- Edit Parent Information Access
- Check the box for Behavior Logs
- Save
While creating a behavior log, the author can indicate if it should be shown to parents. If Hidden From Parents is set to No, the log may be accessed at any time by parents by following these steps:
- Go to Parent Main > Miscellaneous > Behavior Logs
Instructors and admins also have the option to send the logs via email to parents. This is particularly useful for parents with limited or no access to the parent portal, and for behaviors that were not shared on the parent portal altogether.
You can set up email templates to send the particular behavior logs easily to parents. To review/update the templates:
- As an admin
- Go to Admin Main > Options > Default Email Templates
- As an instructor
- Go to Instructor Main > Gradebook > Setup > Email Templates
- Create Template
- Select the Behavior type
- Enter a Template title
- Create the Subject and Body of the email template
- Save
To send behavior log emails:
- As an admin
- Go to Admin Main > Discipline > Behavior Logs
- As an instructor
- Go to Instructor Main > Tools > Behavior Logs
- Search and select a Behavior Log
- Click send email on the right-hand side of the behavior log
- (Optional) Use an email template
- Edit the subject and body of the email as desired
- Send
Behavior Log Reports
Admins run behavior log reports to collect more information on their usage. Some uses of the reporting tools include, but are not limited to, seeing how frequently behavior logs are being entered, reviewing all the behavior logs of a particular student, or reviewing the behavior logs of a particular author.
Use the Behavior Log Details report to view specific information collected from behavior logs. Use the Behavior Log Summary report to review overall numbers of behavior logs entered.
- Go to Admin Main > Discipline
- Use Behavior Log Details or Behavior Log Summary
- Select desired report options and output
- Generate Report
