Secondary Mode - Calculate Daily Attendance at End of Day is the most advanced attendance mode in SchoolInsight. It is most commonly used in high school and middle school settings. In order to calculate students’ daily attendance with the greatest accuracy, schedules must be nearly all correct and complete, and teachers must consistently take attendance every period.

Instructors Take Period Attendance
Under this attendance mode, students will
be in multiple classes which take attendance. For the best results, teachers should consistently take attendance in all classes. Regardless of attendance mode, teachers take period attendance the same way:

Admins Monitor Attendance Throughout the Day
Throughout the day, admins should keep student attendance updated, particularly if a student arrives at school late or leaves school early. The best place to manage this is the Period Attendance Console:
- Go to Admin Main > Attendance > Period Attendance Console
- Select a Date
- Use the top check boxes and filters to display a desired group of students
- Click on a student’s name
- Enter any necessary in/out times and daily notes
- Save
Admins Calculate Missing Period Attendance
It is possible that at the end of the day, some classes still may be missing attendance. Admins or instructors will need to fill in these gaps in order to perform the attendance calculation. Two methods of auto-calculation are provided; choose the one that meets your school's needs. The aggressive mode is recommended and the default when switching to the "Calculate" mode from a different attendance mode. If you need to change from aggressive to conservative mode, please contact SchoolInsight support (support@common-goal.com) for assistance.
Aggressive Missing Period Attendance Calculation
This mode uses an aggressive method designed to save admins time. It will calculate likely values for missing period attendance using entered values. Missing attendance values are determined using any entered period attendance, along with time in/out. Blanks are set to the most optimistic of entered values (e.g. if one of the adjacent periods is Present, the missing period will be marked Present). Time in/out entered between periods is used to fill in missing attendance whenever possible. This mode reduces time spent by admins entering details when period attendance is missing. Warnings will be given for ambiguous situations.
Conservative Missing Period Attendance Calculation
This mode uses a more conservative method. Most periods must have data entered or admins will be required to manually enter much of the missing information. Missing attendance is only filled in if it is surrounded by periods with the exact same attendance code. First period attendance is never automatically calculated. Limited use of time in/out is provided. Admins will need to manually update the remaining missing period attendance prior to calculating daily attendance.
Admins Calculate Daily Attendance
The attendance calculation uses each student’s record of period attendance to generate a number of instructional minutes that the student was present. These minutes are used to select an attendance code.
To calculate the daily attendance:
- Go to Admin Main > Attendance > Period Attendance Console
- Select Calculate Daily Attendance
- If all attendance has not been entered, you will be prompted to use the missing period attendance calculation. All attendance must be entered before the calculation can be done.
- If you would like to prevent instructors from modifying their period attendance for the day after calculating the daily attendance, select Prevent Instructors From Changing Period Attendance
- Select Calculate Daily Attendance
Secondary: Calculate at End of Day requires that attendance codes are selected after the calculation by the automatic selection method. Please refer to How does automatic attendance code selection work? for more details and specific examples on automatic selection.
Admins Manage Daily Attendance
Because multiple attendance codes may be applicable to a student’s number of minutes, admins may need to manually update the daily attendance code. For example, they can switch between Absent-Unexcused and Absent-Excused.
If the desired attendance code is not available to the student, then corrections may be needed to the student’s period attendance, the student’s schedule, or the school’s attendance settings.
To update daily attendance:
- Go to Admin Main > Attendance > Period Attendance Console
- Select a Date
- Use the top check boxes and filters to select a desired group of students
- Click on a student’s name
- If necessary, correct period attendance using the drop-downs to edit/update the information
- Choose a new daily attendance code which is available based on the calculation of instructional minutes
- Save
