How do I enter Oklahoma Wave class data?

This article explains how to update class data fields that are required for Oklahoma Wave reporting. The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) requires the following class data fields to be reported to the Wave in the SectionInfoInfo object:

  • Medium of Instruction
  • Location of Instruction
  • Instructor Position Type
  • Room
  • Period of the Day

There are 3 ways to update Oklahoma Wave data for a class. Best practice is to update all known data using option 1 and 2, prior to using option 3.  Option 3 is a data validation mechanism that is designed to show you missing and erroneous data after you enter data using the first two options. 

  1. Edit a single class
  2. Mass edit classes
  3. Verify Wave/SIF

Edit a Single Class

Editing a single class is a good option when you have recently added new classes or you have discovered that you have few class errors.  

To edit a single class:

  1. Go to School Main > Classes/Sections
  2. Find and Edit the class
  3. Set the required data fields
  4. Save

Note that for Wave reporting, all classes must have a room number and period of the day assigned. For self-contained and non-scheduled classes, the Wave/OSDE accepts any room and any period of the day. Therefore, you can assign all self-contained classes to the same room and same period of the day.

Mass Edit Classes

Mass editing allows you to update data fields for many classes at the same time. It is highly recommended that you update only one data field at a time so as to avoid making unintended changes to your classes. Therefore, when you need to update multiple data fields for multiple classes, use the mass edit feature multiple times, setting the intended data fields and selecting the courses that they apply to.

The Wave data fields that can be updated via Mass Edit are:

  • Medium of Instruction
  • Location of Instruction

To mass edit class data fields:

  1. Go to School Main > Classes/Sections > Mass Edit 
  2. Under Data to Edit, find the data field that you intend to update
  3. (Optional) Use the Filter classes to find certain classes
  4. Scroll down to find the class listing
  5. Select the classes to be updated
  6. Save

Note: All data fields with a value entered will be updated on the selected classes. Therefore, data fields in the Data to Edit section that are not intended to be updated, should be left blank. 

Verify Wave/SIF

The Wave data validation tool is designed to help find data that is missing or invalid according to Wave rules. It’s best practice to try to complete your data entry via mass editing or single course entry before using the tool.

To access and update data via the Wave/SIF validation tool:

  1. Go to Main > WAVE/SIF Data > Verify Data
  2. Find the SectionInfo object
  3. Click on + to expand the object
  4. Select a row to edit
  5. Hove your mouse to the end of the row and click on to edit
