On occasion, you may need to link a class to a new course. In SchoolInsight, courses signify a specific material that is taught year after year, usually defined by subject area, grade level, and rigor. Classes are linked to courses but define the specific group of students studying that material together, at the same time, under the same teacher(s). A course may have multiple classes each year. 3rd period AP calculus and 4th period AP calculus would be two classes of the same course.
When do I need to assign a class to a different course?
- Class was created by an instructor and is not assigned to any course
To use course-based report cards and ensure consistency across academic years, every class should be linked to a course. If instructors have created their own classes, an admin should link each class to a course.
2. Students were accidentally placed in the wrong course
For example, the admin accidentally placed students in Algebra when they should be in Geometry. Instead of creating an entirely new class of Geometry and transferring grades, an admin could link the existing class to the Geometry course.
3. A core attribute of the course is changing, and you don’t want that change to affect previous years
Most attributes on a course are not academic-year-specific. This means if you change these attributes the previous academic years’ report cards and transcripts will also be affected. Only three attributes of course data can be changed annually:
- Grading Scale
- Report Card Item List
- Category List
Changes to other attributes (such as number of credits, whether or not the course counts for GPA, the weighted status of the course, the state number, etc.), will require the class to be linked to the new course which contains the new attributes. This method allows grades to be preserved, as long as the grading scale and report card item list are the same.
How do I assign a class to a different course?
First verify that the course already exists in your course catalog. If you can find it in the Course - Single View page, you can link the section to the course. If it does not exist, or if core attributes on the course are changing, you will need to create a new course.
To link a class to a different course:
- Go to Admin Main > Classes/Sections
- Edit the class
- In the Course field, start typing the new course name and choose the new course
- Save
