This article explains the difference between level and availability. In SchoolInsight, several entities require administrators to decide at what level they will be edited. Administrators will also need to determine if those entities will have availability to one building or many buildings in the district.
Level in SchoolInsight
In SchoolInsight, there are two levels: district and school. Some entities may require you to be at the district or school level to update them.
Classes and sections are an example of school-managed entities. Classes and sections are items that must be edited or created at the school level. In contrast, online registration is often an item that is managed at the district level, because registration forms are often uniform across a district.
An example of an item that can be created at either the district or school level are academic calendars. If an academic calendar is created at the district level, then changes to it must be made at the district level by district administrators. If a calendar is created at the school level, edits to the calendar can be made at the school level and by school level administrators.
Availability in SchoolInsight
In SchoolInsight, entities created at the district level can also have their availability customized. Let’s revisit the academic calendar example. During the creation of an academic calendar, administrators will need to decide at what level the calendar should exist and, if created at the district level, its availability.
When administrators are creating a calendar at the district level, they have four options for availability:
Level | Description | Configurability
District | Entire District | All Buildings in the District
District | School Type | Elementary, Middle, or High School
District | Set of Schools | Specific School Selections (Multi-Select)
School | Single School | One Building Only |
When customizing availability, consider whether other buildings in the same district will use the same entity and whether district or school administrators should have access to edit the item. District entities will eliminate the need to make edits on a school by school basis. However, district entities can only be edited by district administrators. Choosing the correct availability option can effectively reduce tedious administrative work and help prevent accidental changes in the system.
