Sometimes, an instructor may decide that an adjustment needs to be made to the weights on their gradebook categories in the middle of the academic year. Instructors should not adjust the existing weights as that would impact previous gradebook grades. This article explains how an instructor can adjust gradebook category weights without impacting existing gradebook grades. For information on how to set up gradebook categories, please see the following article: Gradebook Categories.
To adjust category weights mid year, instructors should edit their existing gradebook categories and change their title to include “.old” at the end as an indicator that the category should no longer be used. Then, they should create new categories with the new weights. Moving forward, the instructor should only use the new categories on assignments. The process can be broken down into two primary steps:
- Edit existing category titles
- Create and use new categories for the rest of the year
To edit existing category titles:
- Go to Instructor Main > Gradebook > Set up
- Categories
- Select the class you would like to make changes to
- Hover over a category and click
- Add “.old” to the end of the category title
- Save
- Repeat for any category whose weight you plan to change
To create a new category:
- Go to Instructor Main > Gradebook > Set up
- Categories
- Select the class you would like to make changes to
- Enter values for
- Category Title
- Weight
- Number of Low Scores to Drop
- Save
